Riisitunturi: even better on a sunny day
Riisitunturi National Park is famous for tykky — thick crown snow that bends the pine trees into white, sculpted shapes. Our small group (max 8) drives about 2.5 hours from Rovaniemi, then walks a marked 4.3 km trail, easy to moderate and suitable from age 6, up to a summit 465 metres above sea level. The hike among the crown-snow trees, the trail itself and the views along the way are worthwhile in any weather — the tour runs as scheduled through cloud, fog or light rain, and is never cancelled for anything short of genuinely unsafe conditions. There’s no distant panorama to be flattened by grey skies — the subject is right in front of you, and the canyon walls shelter the trail from wind. If anything, the soft, even light of an overcast day suits photographing ice better than harsh sunlight does, since it avoids blown-out highlights on the ice.
